The War Hawks
by patrickb on Feb.18, 2011, under Uncategorized
On page 308 of the book the history textbook it explains how the war of 1812 was started because the war hawks persuaded people to vote for war instead of peace. President James Madison wasn’t sure if he should declare war against Britain or trade with them. The war hawks thought that the only way to stop them from taking their sailors and from insulting them was to declare war. Others thought not to do that and continue trading with them. Madison had all the states vote. The war hawks won and Madison declared war. This war was known as the war of 1812. The book doesn’t say everything that the war hawks did. From 1811 to 1812 they argued for war. They were outraged by Britain’s act of impressment. The book doesn’t say how long they were trying to persaude Madison to declare war and it also doesn’t explain how hard it was to do so. First when they people from the wars hawks became congressmen they had to get in higher position and to earn more respect. They also had to get more people to join so they could have more people favoring war than peace. It wasn’t as easy as the bokks make it seem.

Kansas-Nebraska Act
by patrickb on Feb.06, 2011, under Uncategorized
In 1854 the Kansas-Nebraska Act was introduced by Stephen Douglas. Douglas was a senator at the time and wanted to make a compromise. A railroad was going to be built to the Pacific Ocean. Douglas wanted it to go through Chicago but other wanted it to go through Texas. Douglas thought of it going through Chicago, and the territories of Nebraska and Kansas. This would allow more land for people to live on. The act was later approved by Franklin Peirce
Great Leaders and History
by patrickb on Jan.24, 2011, under Uncategorized
“Do great leaders make history or does history make leaders?”
Personally I think this question can go both ways. Some leaders made history and some leaders were made by history. Once a king or queen passes away there son/daughter takes their place. They become a leader of the country because of the history of there family. They can also make history though. Other leaders did not become leaders because they don’t really have a choice and they became leaders to complete a goal. While doing so they can create history by doing something others may think of as amazing usually because the odds aren’t on your side.
Write a comment saying your stance on the question/debate.
Martin Luther King Junior
by patrickb on Jan.24, 2011, under Uncategorized
Most people like me think of Martin Luther King Junior as a leader. He was smart and attended college at the age of 15. He skipped the ninth and twelfth grades in high school. He went to Morehouse College. Martin Luther King Junior was also powerful. He was powerful because he was doing what he thought was right and what a lot of other people thought was right. He was also was straight to the point. He did not sugar code it trying to say the problem nicely. He came out and said it. One of his speeches was this one:
“All I’m saying is simply this, that all life is interrelated, that somehow we’re caught in an inescapable network of mutuality tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. For some strange reason, I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. You can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality.”
-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
I think the main characteristic he used was his smarts. Everyone realized he was doing the right thing because he was extremely smart. If someone not well educated came up and spoke their mind not a lot of people would follow them because they are not that smart and they would look bad. Smart people are usually right and usually do the right thing. Martin Luther King Junior did the right thing.
In this picture that I got off of wikipedia says his organization is Southern Christian Leadership Conference. That is an organization about the power of black churches. It was leadership in the name and he was part of it and he became a great leader. Just wanted to point that out.
Leadership 101
by patrickb on Jan.20, 2011, under Uncategorized
Good leaders now whats best. They are very smart. They are straight forward with what they need to do or need someone to do. Leaders are made. You are not born a leader you become a leader. When you are a child you aren’t a leader. When your a child you start to become a leader. We where playing a game outside. It was a long time ago and I don’t really remember the game but it was probably capture the flag. It was at my backyard so i knew where to go and even came up with a strategy. One time on a school project when we were in groups there was one person who told us what to do and we listened. Anyone can be a leader and everyone has been a leader. No one is constantly a leader. Everyone has times when they were leaders and they have had times where they were following a leader. My strongest abilities is probably knowing what to do or guessing what the outcome will be.
Significant Stuffed Animal
by patrickb on Jan.05, 2011, under Uncategorized
This is a stuffed animal that was given to be at the hospital. My Grandpa had picked it out for me when I was just a baby. My Grandpa worked for one of those companies that tow cars away when they are parked where they are not supposed to be. When I was 2 years old he died from a heart attack. He was about 50 years old when he passed away. My parents told me that he loved his job and he was great at it. They also tell me many funny stories about him. The gorilla was the last thing I have left to remind me of the man I never got to know.
January 2nd, 2439

As you can tell I am from what you would call the future and what I would call the present. The reason I went back 428 is to see what you had and compare it to what we have now in 2439. It is a science project that I have to do for school. I am in the 8th grade and to what I can see you only have 12 grades. In 2430 the President made 2 extra school years and then there is college. We spend 4 years in middle school and then 5 years in high school. It is supposed to make Americans more sophisticated and smart. We have fallen behind on education we are rank #231 most educated country in the world. Since the 2 extra years on school we are now ranked #7. I would have never thought that 2 years would do that much but it has.
Old Ships To Modern Ships
by patrickb on Dec.19, 2010, under Uncategorized
In 1794 the naval act was passed. The differences between the ships we have now and the ships they use to use are:
- We use automatic guns to fight off the enemy. The modern ships have lots of machine guns torpedoes and much more.
- Another difference is the size of the ships. Modern ships are bigger than what the had hundreds of years ago.
- in the 1700s and 1800s they used the Navy a lot. The Navy was needed. Now its not needed as much as it used to be. USA doesn’t fight as much wars on the water as we use to.
- The Modern ships are made of metal and the older ships were made of wood.
- The old ships used sails and the modern ships now use engines to move.
The similarities of the old Navy ships and the new Navy ships are:
- They have the same purpose To transport soldiers.
- Both of the ships today and the ships from hundreds of years ago are needed in a war.
- Both ship weighed about the same weight.
- Both ships have a beam at least 30 feet or more.
Both ships were needed for the war that they were in. Naval destroyer carried troops and fought off other ships and so did the USS New York.
Although this is not the USS New York but it is the closest thing I could find to it.
Cherry Tree?
by patrickb on Dec.17, 2010, under Uncategorized
I’m sure you have all heard of George Washington cutting down his father’s cherry tree. Is it really true? Did he really do it? I think he didn’t only because George Washington said he cut it with his little hatchet. You can’t cut down a tree with a hatchet. George Washington was young and might not of have the strength to do it. It would take to long. His father would have caught him doing it before he could cut it down. Thats why I think it’s not true.
What Would Happen If…?
by patrickb on Dec.17, 2010, under Uncategorized
What would happen if no one in America was willing to fight for our country? All the other countries in the world who hate the USA would attack us. We would be at our weakest point when no one will be willing to fight. It may sound mean for other countries to do that to us but wouldn’t we do it to them? The saying goes “all is fair in love and war” so nothing is unfair when in a war and you do what you have to do to win it. This is a negative question but it needs to be answered. Would we ask help form other countries? I don’t know but if you have an answer to this question please feel free to write a comment stating what it is.
