Did George Washington really cut down his father’s cherry tree?

16 12 2010

Is it really true that George Washington cut down his father’s cherry tree?  No, this is not true.  It was all a myth.  This myth is that George Washington cut down his father’s favorite cherry tree and when his dad asked him if he cut it down his famous words were “I cannot tell a lie, father, you know I cannot tell a lie! I did cut it with my little hatchet.”  People made this story up because it was a way that George Washington would gain his trust with people.  Authors thought that if they made this up that everyone would know that George Washington is not a liar and that he is trustworthy.  Yes, George Washington is trustworthy but the whole myth about him cutting down his father’s cherry tree and Washington admitting that he actually did was all a lie.  I think that people should know that the truth is George Washington is a trustful man, but he did NOT cut down his father’s cherry tree.  My proof that i know this is that in class Mr. Bogush told us that he is trustworthy and that authors only made up this myth so people would know that he is trustworthy.
