In Australia at the moment, many of the powerful people are women.

Governor-General (head of state): Quentin Bryce
Prime Minister (head of government): Julia Gillard
and many people in the State Governments of Australia, for example Kristina Kenneally (New South Wales) and Anna Bligh (Queensland).

The Australian constitution has been “significantly amended” since 1900.

One of the latest amendments – which would have been done on referendum – would have been to make Australia a republic (it is currently a constitutional monarchy) and to add a preamble to the constitution.
