Wednesday May 19, 2010 The Library of Congress from Washington D.C. came to our school. We have been participating in there project since December. We have been archivingwebsites to be preserved by the LOC. We met after school every Friday until the end of January. We did all of the archiving and choosing of the websites on our own. We found out on April 1st that they would be coming to interview us. They arrived on Tuesday night to set up all of there equitment.
The had brought two major video cameras, two major light sources as well as cameras and all of the questions they would be asking us.
We had four groups of 4-5 people in each group. We would sit around a circular table and the interviewer would ask us questions about our experience during the project.
In the begining we were nervous and with all of the lights and cameras it was a little stressful. After we got past the first question we all began to relax and it all started to come naturally.
After we finished the group interviews we went down to the library. About 5 people were put on the computer to demonstrate exactly h0w to archive a website.
Then the rest of us were at the table while the interviewer asked us some final questions.
In the end the day went great and the interview went very smooth. We got to end the day with a party!
Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767. He was born without a father. Heonly had his mother and his 3 brothers. He became a soldier at a very young age. But, he was taken prissoner by a British prison ship. After his mom saved him she died a few months later along with his brothers who died in the war. He was all alone and decided to become a teacher. He then decided to study law. In 1791 he got married to Rachel Robards. Rachel was married but separated from her former husband Lewis Robards. Someone told hm that he would become a good president if he ran and that started his career. The first time he won for president he didn’t win. But, the second time he did win and became the seventh president.
I believe that he wouldn’t be a very good president because he was raised mostly by himself and when making decisions he would only think of himself and not the rest of the community. His first day in office he threw a huge party and invited everyone. The White House was a mess and he had to sleep somewhere else. These would most likely be common and not much work would be finished.
Should we judge someone on there actions or there intentions? I believe that people should be judged by there intentions. Someone may mean well just not show it in a way that we may understand. For example and teacher may push you to challenge yourself in school. We may feel like we can’t do it and that we aren’t ready to actually trust ourselves and just try. The teachers may come off as harsh or mean but really all they want is for us to succeed. If we judge someone by how they act that isn’t really fair to the person if you don’t really know them. They may have a back round that you aren’t aware of that causes them to act that way.
Sepember 1814— Baltimore was attacked by the British. The British just recently burned down Washington. During the War of 1812 the British bombed Fort McHenry. On board a nearby carrier ship was a man named Francis Scott Key. During this ordeal, he witnessed the scene and wrote what is now the National Anthem.
Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Translation:
Wow! The sun is just rising in the morning,
We were happily cheering, so what changed since last night?
Whose wide stripes and bright stars, through the dangerous battle,
Over the walls of our forts, we watched the flag proudly waving?
And the bright explosion from the bombs, exploding in the air,
Gave evidence that our flag was still waving(we were still fighting).
Tell us is our flag still waving
On our land of freedom and where brave soldiers live?
On August of 1814 the British troops marched inward twords Washington, DC. Because the American Army was headed twords Canada and were busy organizing there militia, the British would have a quick and easy victory. On August 24, 1814 was the day that the British set fire to the White House. Extensive damage was caused from the fire.
Have you ever thought of the questions: Why do we have symbols? or Why do we create symbols? Symbols that we have usually connect with something we have done or something that has happened to us during our life. Many people have the same symbols but they mean something different. People make the symbols personal and unique. We usually make/create symbols to remind us of something that has happened in our life worthy to remember. I think the American flag would be considered a symbol because the flag reminds us of our countries history. To me I believe that the flag symbolizes freedom, justice and history.
I have many different passions. I enjoy playing softball but I have begun an interest in basketball. I play on a team through my town. We are all friends and all get along and that makes us a great team. We are like a huge family and cheer each other on no matter what. We don’t mind losing but its always fun to win.
A hero is someone who does good thing for the community and inspires you to do good things. Someone who fits these qualities is the presidents. They have led our country in hard times they would be considered heroes.
