Thu, 24 Feb 2011 19:58:22 +0000 en-US hourly 1 http://moranmustangs.org/?v=3.5 Declaring War http://moranmustangs.org/kevinb/2011/02/24/declaring-war/ http://moranmustangs.org/kevinb/2011/02/24/declaring-war/#comments Thu, 24 Feb 2011 19:58:22 +0000 KevinC http://moranmustangs.org/kevinb/?p=244 On page 309 in my textbook, I read about the U.S. declaring war on Britain to start the war of 1812, I thought the book did a pretty good job of explaining it, but there are a couple of things I would have added.  First, I would have added what declaring war really is.  I thought that declaring was just sending the army to another country, but there is actually a formal way to declare war.  To declare war, a declaration  of war is released by the government.  This declaration states that a state of war exists between the countries.  I would’ve also added the votes of declaring the war.  The Senate voted 19-13 for the war and the House of Representatives voted 79-49 for the war.  A good thing that should’ve been added was the date they declared war, which was June 18, 1812.  An interesting thing I would’ve added is that Great Britain made impressment illegal before they declared war, but the message wasn’t received in time.  Other than that, the section wasn’t bad.

]]> http://moranmustangs.org/kevinb/2011/02/24/declaring-war/feed/ 0 Lincoln’s Nightmare http://moranmustangs.org/kevinb/2011/02/02/lincolns-nightmare/ http://moranmustangs.org/kevinb/2011/02/02/lincolns-nightmare/#comments Thu, 03 Feb 2011 00:44:51 +0000 KevinC http://moranmustangs.org/kevinb/?p=241 Have you ever heard of President Lincoln’s Nightmare?  I bet you haven’t.  Here’s how it goes.  Three days before his assassination the President told a story, this was a story from a dream he had 10 days ago.  As told by Lincoln, he walked into a room, there was a death-like feeling in the room and everyone was crying.  In front of Lincoln was a casket.  Lincoln was confused, he didn’t know what was going on.  Lincoln asked a solider,  ”Who has died in the White House?’  The soldier replies, “The President.”  Lincoln is confused, he demands from the soldier, “How?”  The soldier again replied, “He was killed by an assassin.”  After that there was a loud burst of grief from the crowd of people crying and it woke Lincoln up.  Lincoln said that he didn’t sleep again that night, and was strangely annoyed by the nightmare ever since.

1. Brave

2. Peaceful

3. Intelligent

He was brave because he was a civil rights activist.  Can you imagine how many people hated him or even how many people wanted to kill him?  A lot of people hated him, that’s for sure.  Most whites liked it the way it was, all of the colors go to different schools, use different water fountains, etc.  But Martin did not care what these people thought about him, he wanted equal rights so he went out into a world where whites were better than everyone, and got civil rights.  Martin Luther King, Jr. was also peaceful.  Seem hard to believe, but he was.  Instead of trying to make a huge war out of this, and have the blacks fight the whites, he just gave speeches, started boycotts and started marches.  He was nonviolent, just like Gandhi, and because of that, he got what he wanted.  Martin Luther King was also very intelligent.  King used his knowledge to figure out a way to get civil rights without violence.  He also used his knowledge to write really good speeches that everyone remembers, such as, “I have a dream”.  Although it is kind of obvious that he was smart because you can’t become a leader by begging the government to give you equal rights, you needed a plan, a VERY good plan.  Without knowledge, Martin Luther King would’ve never had such a good plan.

Or does history make great leaders?”  That is a very good question.  Personally, I believe that it can be both.  A lot of the time great leaders make history, such as Martin Luther King, Jr.  MLK made great decisions that helped the civil rights movement.  Everything that Martin Luther King did as a leader turned into history.  Sometimes it doesn’t work like this.  Sometimes history is written to make someone seem like a leader, but they aren’t.  History is written to make it sound how someone wants it to sound.  Read about the Revolutionary War in a American textbook, and then read about it overseas in a British textbook.  You’ll read different things.  History can be written to make me sound like a leader.  But once in a while, history makes someone seem like a great leader, that leader might not know it, but a lot of people believe it.  For instance, history made Rosa Parks seem like a leader.  What did Rosa really do?  She sat in the front of the bus where whites were supposed to sit and she didn’t give up her seat.  Honestly, all she did was sit down.  Back then it seems like she wasn’t a leader, but through history, she actually became a great leader.

]]> http://moranmustangs.org/kevinb/2011/01/28/history-made-everyday-leaders-not-so-much/feed/ 0 Leader. http://moranmustangs.org/kevinb/2011/01/15/leader/ http://moranmustangs.org/kevinb/2011/01/15/leader/#comments Sat, 15 Jan 2011 22:12:28 +0000 KevinC http://moranmustangs.org/kevinb/?p=231 A leader needs to be smart.  If you want to be smart you need to be brave and courageous.  You need these characteristics because they help you make smart decisions, another thing a leader needs.  Leaders are also made.  You can’t just born and be like “Hey guys, I’m a leader”,  you need to earn it.  You can’t go to school, fail every class, not have a care in the world and be a leader.  Becoming a leader is hard work, being a leader is not for lazy people.  I’ve been a leader, when I’m working in a group for school and we get off task or we don’t do things right.  I use my brain and make right decisions for my group and we end up with an A.  I also follow leaders everyday.  I follow my principal at school by following the rules.  Even when I’m not in school I follow the President by abiding by his laws.  Anybody can be a leader if they want to.  They would need to work hard and gain respect from their community, which is hard work, but it can happen.  I think I can be a leader at times.  When around my peers and not other adults, I can be a leader.  One reason why is maturity.  Compared to kids in my grade, I’m very mature.  Sometimes I may not act like it, and other kids may think they’re actually the mature, but that’s not always the case.  They just don’t realize what makes them mature and immature.  That is also my strongest abilities as a leader.  Maturity can help you tell right from wrong, and that’s just what it does for me.  I can lead people, because I’m mature and I can tell right from wrong compared to a lot of people my age.

Take your mind on a journey to last year, while you were probably getting ready for the Super Bowl, I was wrestling my heart out at a tournament .  At this tournament there were some very good teams, and with my luck, everyone in my weight class was VERY good.  Remember this was my first year wrestling, so I wasn’t very good.  I was only wrestling varsity because my friend who wrestled varsity got injured.  So I go throughout my day wrestling and then we get to my last match.  I had seen this kid wrestle before, and I knew he was really good.  When he wrestled my friend before he got injured he beat him (my friend is a very good wrestler).  I take my spot on the mat and I was really scared.  The match starts and we circle around each other for a while and then the takes me down.  That’s when it happened.  The next move, I have no clue what it was, all I remember is that I hit my head really hard on the mat and then I got knocked out, it wasn’t that long because the referee didn’t notice, but I opened my eyes and I was lying down and it was really scary because I couldn’t move my arms, so I just let him pin me.  I get up and there were tears running from my eyes, I didn’t want to cry, but I barely had any control over my body, I was really dizzy too.  So I’m really dizzy, but I walk up, shake the other coaches hand and I finally get to sit down.  It was my first time wrestling varsity AND I got knocked out during one match so, I definitely think I deserved that medal.

First would be the house I live in.  For some reason I’ve always have an obsession with houses.  I’ve always thought about the house i want to live in.  I’ve always wanted at the least a Colonial, but if I had a lot of money I have my very own floor plan.  First, I’d start off with an in-ground pool.  That is the basis for my house.  After that, I’d put all of the rooms around it.  A kitchen, a family room a dining room, a sunroom, a game room and a bathroom.  Upstairs would be all of the bedrooms and a couple bathrooms.  Also, I think it would look cool if my house was made out of wood.  Put a roof over all of this greatness and you have my house.  Sounds cool, right?  I would also donate a lot of money to multiple charities because just because I’m rich doesn’t mean others have to suffer.  With any other money I’d buy a cool car and a quad or a go-kart.  My house would be cool, just like me. ;)  P.S., I’d also buy a cake from Carlo’s Bakery.
