Zebulon Pike’s Exploration of 1805

Filed under: Uncategorized — kristag at 4:23 pm on Sunday, February 27, 2011

Our textbook did a good job to describe Zebulon Pike’s exploration. They didn’t put a lot of details in it though. Some they missed were:

  • Hon June 24
  • He brought 20 soldiers and 50 freed Osage prisoners
  • They tried to climb what is now called Pike’s Peak but failed because of its 14,000 ft high summit, so they climbed a smaller summit called likely Mt. Miller, which is named after a man with them

I would make the book more kid friendly by adding more pictures and maybe using more kid friendly words. I think having pictures would make it easier to understand because some people are visual learners. I would also try to find ways to connect it to middle schoolers, so we can understand it better and relate to how they felt.

“Do great leaders make history? Or does history make great leaders?”

Filed under: Uncategorized — kristag at 6:29 pm on Thursday, January 27, 2011

I think that this quote means basically, do people make history, or does our past make this people leaders?.  I think that leaders make history because if people didn’t become leaders and change things, there would be no history, everything would stay the same.

Manon Rhéaume

Manon Rhéaume wasthe first woman to play in a NHL exhibitiongame. I think she is a leader. She was persistent, hard-working, and head-strong. She cleared the way for many woman to follow their dreams. She even started The Manon Rhéaume Foundation in 2008, which she started for that reason, to inspire them and help them achieve their goals.  One of her projects was to make hockey skates for woman. Even before these events she played her first NHL hockey game. It was on September 23, 1992. She played goalie for the Tampa Bay Lighting in the third period. She even played in the 1998 Olympics. She played for the Canadian Woman’s team. Below is a picture of the helmet she played in at the Olympics.

She kept trying to meet her goal, but many people had put her down, but she never let any of that bother her and kept trying. Manon Rhéaume practiced with the Lightning the whole off-season.

Now girls everywhere can follow her example and believe anything is possible as long as you try your hardest and never give up!

Significant Objects Unit

Filed under: Uncategorized — kristag at 2:49 pm on Thursday, January 20, 2011

I thought that this unit was fun. It made me learn a lot about people and their personalities. I loved hearing the stories and telling mine. I just don’t really get why we did it. I mean it ties in when we did the section from the reading and had to make a significant object from that, but why didn’t we just do that and skip our personal one?

Are YOU a leader?

Filed under: Uncategorized — kristag at 1:29 pm on Monday, January 10, 2011

I think that leaders can be born or made.It also depends on your personality. I think it helps if you are out going and independent. You also have to be courageous and not afraid to stand up for what you believe in and do your own thing. Anyone and everyone can be a leader, it depends on whether or not you decide to be one. You have many important choices in life but I think that, that is one of the most important ones. Its your choice to stand out in a crowd or blend in. To do what you want or follow someone else. My friends and I chose not to do what everyone else does. But, we choose to be ourselves and we don’t really care what people think. I think we are leaders in that sense, we don’t want to be “cool” per say. I think more people should follow us and not be concerned about what people think. It is a lot easier to just be yourself. I think that we are good leaders. We are crazy and fun. I wish more people are like that, not mindless zombies who want to be part of the “popular group”. Everyone should be a leader not a follower and do what they want and not what everyone else does.

Barbados!

Filed under: Uncategorized — kristag at 8:23 pm on Thursday, January 6, 2011

MY PIECE OF CORAL!In 2006 my family and I went to Barbados on a cruise. It was a lot of fun. We also went with my God-Mother and her family. Anyways we went to the beach one day and while I was walking around I came across a big patch of strange looking rocks. I grabbed one and ran to show my mom. It wasn’tactually a rock it was a piece of coral. It was white and filled with tiny holes. I thought it was so cool. I stuck it in my bag and took it home with me. It is always in sight in my room to help me remember all the good times we had on that cruise.

George Washington and The Cherry Tree…Fact Or Fiction?

Filed under: Uncategorized — kristag at 5:35 pm on Tuesday, December 21, 2010

Have you ever heard the story of George Washington and the Cherry Tree? I have many times. For class I had to find out if it was a fact or just a fictional story. It is believed that that is Fictional. The man who wrote its name is Mason Locke Weems. He was a big business man. Most historians believe because of that fact that he wrote it just for the money.
