Does anybody know anything about Tenskwatawa? Does anybody even know who he was? Most of you probably don’t have the answer to either one of those questions. Do you want to know why? The reason is because your history textbook doesn’t mention his name once. They do mention him but they don’t state his name. They preferred to call him Tecumseh’s brother. I personally feel that they should have gave more information on him since he was a big part in The Battle of Tippecanoe. When Tecumseh left to gather more Indians for his Indian Confederation he left his brother in charge. That is when William Henry Harrison decided to attack and that is what started The Battle of Tippecanoe. Eventually Harrison’s troops won and burned Tecumseh’s village. All this happened when Tenskwatawa was in charge. So it’s almost as if it was Tenskwatawa fault that the Indians lost and that Tecumseh’s lost all the support he needed. This shows that he played an important role in the Battle. That is why I feel that the textbook should go into more detail about Tenskwatawa.
If I was the writer of that textbook some things that I would have included about Tenskwatawa are:
-A little bit about his childhood and family such as:
-He fathered a total of 20 children and had 3 wives
-He grew up without parents
-Grew up to be the laughing-stock of his community and turned to alcohol
-Some info about all the good deeds he has done:
-Led by Tenskwatawa and Tecumseh, thousands of Algonquin-speaking Indians gathered at Tippecanoe to gain spiritual strength
-He led a purification movement to return his people to their traditional ways
-Some of his weaknesses:
-he never learned how to hunt or fight successfully, skills essential to a Shawnee (his tribe) men
-his poor looks and braggart personality didn’t win him many friends
-He lost an eye in a hunting accident
Basically I would include a little section just about him and write a short biography on him. I actually feel that the textbook doesn’t give a lot of information on any of the famous people. I find it more interesting to read about all the different people than the actual events, so I hope that in the future they improve the history books and add more info so that the kids will actually feel excited to go and read about what happened in their country’s past.
These are some pictures that I would include with section:
Many of you people probably know that our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, was often referred to as honest Abe. But the question is, does anybody know why? Of course you don’t and that’s why I’m here to tell you.
One day Abe was just sitting in his store counting how money he had earned that day. He found out that he had a few cents extra of what he needed to have. Most of you would probably not care, some of you would be happy, and others of you would do what Abe did. Instead of keeping those extra cents, he decides to go for a long walk and return the money. I mean a few cents is nothing today but back then it was a pretty big deal. So if you look at it from a person from that time period it would make more sense, and it wouldn’t seem so outrageous. That wasn’t the only time where Abe showed great honesty. Another time was…
It was a bright sunny day. Abe was checking his scales and he found out that something horribly wrong had occurred. He had weighed a tag of tea for a woman the other day and he found out that he had given too little for the money she paid. It’s a nightmare come true. So instead of keeping the money he went and gave it to the lady. The lady didn’t even know that she had paid too much. Isn’t that so nice of Abe. No wonder he was our president.
Like this a lot more incidents have occurred, and that is why Abraham Lincoln is widely known as honest Abe. If you want more stories and more info on Abe Lincoln just click on the links below.
When you see the word leader, who is the first person that pops into your mind. For me it’s always Martin Luther King Jr. King was a great man. He was brave, cared about the people around him, and he was very ambitious. All the qualities that a good leader needs. As most of you probably know his goal was to get the freedom for African Americans. He wanted them to be treated fairly and have the same rights as all the other people. In order to achieve his goal he had to face some big hurdles including the threat of being killed. But he was a brave man and he crossed all the hurdles until the very end. You could tell he cared about the people around him and was not selfish because he didn’t want freedom just for himself, he wanted it for all the African Americans. It would have been a lot easier to just get freedom for himself, but he didn’t want to take the easy way out. He wanted to do the right thing. The last leadership quality I said that he had was that he was very ambitious. He had a goal that he needed to achieve, and he went to extremes to achieve it. Don’t you think that that is real leadership? I look up to him even now and I’m sure there are a lot of people that still do as well.
Which do you believe is correct? I think that great leaders make history. Without great leaders what would our history be. There would be nothing. If Martin Luther king Jr. wasn’t there, would there be freedom for African Americans right now? No? So we would still have a world of slavery and injustice. Without George Washington would we be free from the British? No. So there would still be wars erupting everywhere. Without Gandhi would people be living peacefully amongst each other right now? No. It would be chaotic. If we didn’t have all those great people then everything that when on back then would still be going on now. So you couldn’t call that stuff history if it still goes on now. That is why I think that great leaders make history and history doesn’t make great leaders.
Recently in school we did an activity called the significant objects unit. In this unit we had to write a story about history, then pick a significant object in the story, then we did a live auction for the object. If you want to go the site with all the objects just click on the smiley This project was very fun and I felt good after doing it because all the money we raise will go to Clinque Monique in Mali, Africa. You might think that this project must have been really hard but it really wasn’t. The hardest part was writing the story and that only took about 2 class periods. Besides it was fun so it didn’t really feel like work. Something that I think should be changed is that we shouldn’t have gone live when we were auctioning. I think we should record it before hand, and keep recording until we get it perfect, then we should play the video that was perfect. But I guess that would take a long time, so maybe we should limit people to 3 tries and then pick the best one. That way it could have been a little bit more organized. Some things that I thought went well were that when we were auctioning off our objects nobody in my class stuttered with their lines and everybody remembered their lines. That’s always a plus. Another thing that went well was that the stories were really good. They weren’t so full of fantasy that you couldn’t get the historical part. I learned a lot from this project. The main thing was that I learned about my topic which was the Republican Victory, but I also learned that I work good with some people that I didn’t expect to work good with, and I think that now I am a little bit more comfortable with presenting in front of the class.Yaay!!!:) I definitely think that this project should be done again. It is fun and it’s for a good cause.
What makes someone a leader to you? To me a person is a leader if he/she could lead as well as listen, they shouldn’t doubt their decisions, and they have to be willing to do what’s best for other people rather than just thinking about themselves. Nobody is born with the gift of leadership, you need to learn to become a leader. You need to earn that position and the respect you get from it. I personally think that I am more of a follower. In school, whenever we are doing group projects I usually lead the group, but I only do that because I know that even if I make a mistake it won’t effect our lives that much. When the situation is serious I would probably let somebody else take charge. For example I follow my parents all the time. I know I can’t survive in the “real world” yet and I know that most decisions that you make “out there” will effect you a lot so I let my parents do all the hard work. Why worry about all that stuff now? I am not that brave and this might sound kind of selfish but it’s the truth. If I was in a plane that is about to crash and there is only one parachute left, but there is another person with me, I would take the parachute and jump. That is I think what is holding me back from becoming a leader. I am a coward and a bit selfish. Anybody could become a leader if they have the qualities required for one. It is kind of like a job. Anybody could be doctor if they are qualified. It’s just that you have to work really hard. Right now I don’t really see the need to become a leader and put all that stress on my shoulders, but when the time comes I will just have to suck it up.
What do those look like to you? Most you will probably say, ” Oh, those are just some really cool looking earrings.” Well that is true for most people, but for me they are more than that. Every other year I go to India for the summer. When I go there I always go and meet my great grandparents. Every time I go to their house my great grandmother gives me a gift. This might sound mean but most of the time I always lost the gift within the month I got it in. I never did it on purpose, it just happened that way. On the year of 2007 we went to India, I went to my great grandparents house and my great grandmother gave me these earrings. I really liked them and I said thank you and gave them a hug and the whole 90 yards. A few days after I returned to the US I got a call from India saying that my great Grandmother had died. From that moment on I kept these earrings very safe. They were always in my room or on my ears. I never let anybody else wear them. These are the only things I have to remember my great grandmother by. I hope that these will get passed on to each generation so that my descendants will have something to remember their ancestors by.
What will October 8, 2100 be like? Nobody knows since that time period didn’t occur yet, but if I had to make a prediction it would go something like this. Considering how high-tech we are now I can’t imagine how it will be in 90 years. There will be flying cars everywhere that don’t need gas (powered by solar energy), we will have jet packs that we can use to go to school instead of riding the boring bus or walking, we will be able to transport places and time travel, our military would be stronger and better since they will have more high-tech equipment. Our Earth would be the most powerful planet in the universe. Not only would the technology have developed over time so will humans. Right now people only use a little part of their brain. But soon I think we will learn how to use the rest and who knows, maybe that can lead to something great like being able to move objects with our minds or reading people’s minds. I hope to live that long so I could find out if all of this would become reality.
Does anybody know what the best question in the world is? Well I do. The best question in the world is, What would happen if…? If I had to fill out the rest of the question it would probably go something like this: What would happen if humans had superpowers? Many people think that would be the best thing in the world. It would be so cool. People would be flying to school instead of walking or taking the bus. When you want to move somewhere you could use your super strength and just lift your whole house and place it in the area you want to live. That way you wouldn’t have to pay money for the movers. Also if you ever break your leg and you can’t move you could use your mind to move objects to you. If your super power is that you are really smart you could save peoples lives by thinking of cures for diseases like cancer. It would be the perfect world or so you think. There are many people that want to do good for the world but there are also a lot that don’t. What I’m trying to say is that even though there will be superheros like superman there will also be super villains like Doctor octopus. They will want to take over the world and if that plan doesn’t go so well they will want to destroy the earth. I don’t know about you but I sure wouldn’t want the earth to be destroyed. It is my home. So next time you wish everybody had superpowers don’t just think about the good that will come out of it also think about the bad. This is Krithika reporting live from my house.
Have you heard the story of George Washington and how honest of a guy he was. He cut down his father’s favorite cherry tree, and when his father asked him if he did it he said “I cannot tell a lie, father, you know I cannot tell a lie! I did cut it with my little hatchet.” Most of you probably did because your parents might have told it to you so you would be honest. But even if you didn’t that really isn’t a problem since the whole story isn’t true. It was made up by the book writer Mason Locke Weems to show how honest the first president of the USA was. So he wrote a story about honesty while he was lying. Pretty ironic if you ask me. Now you are probably thinking why believe me. Well if you don’t then you can read it for yourself on this site.
