Hey - I definitely agree with you - that fighting is standing up for yourself or your personal beliefs. From playing football, I have the "hitting" mentality - or the mentality of wanting to go full out on another person; however, I believe it is completely inappropriate and can lead to serious danger if one pushes for a fight if the problem can be solved non-violently (and in most cases is can). Keep up the good blogging! Check out my blog on Rwanda at http://paulj10oda.edublogs.org
Sincerely,
Paul Jones

I agree that taking a stand for what you believe to be right is the right thing to do - however, as a teacher, I sometimes worry about students putting themselves into dangerous situations, such as trying to take a stand - by themselves - against known gang members (and other bully groups). I think there are many ways to take a stand besides directly confronting someone or something. With the bullying that typically happens at all school sites, simply refusing to laugh is a pretty effective way to deflate a bully without coming off as challenging him/her.

I'm a teacher in the Elk Grove School District in California. I'd love to hear more from you and your classmates on the ways students feel empowered at your site to by 'upstanders' as opposed to 'bystanders.'

No, there would be teachers teaching the class and the people who are doing all your work would just do the work; they would not teach us anything.

Hello Matt,

In the perfect classroom you describe, would those people who do all the work for you, while getting paid, also be teaching you anything?
