Well as most of you know the Star Spangled Banner is are national anthem, but it is surprising how few people actually know what the lyrics mean,  I mean come on how many people actually know what a rampart is nowadays? SO I did a little translation of the anthem so enjoy!

O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light?

Can you see in the early morning, that glorious flag?

Whats so proudly we hail’d at the twight’s last gleaming?

How we stood agaist the cannons and rocket even up till the long night?

O’er the ramparts we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming?

Over the protective barrier we watched, as are flag was proudly waving

And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

And the cannons fire and rocket illuminated the the light,

Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there.

Are flag showed all that we had survived the battle.

O say, does that star- spangled banner yet wave

And does that flag still wave over the fort

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

For are land that we protected.

Thank you.

critiquing a book

Author: Matt | Filed under: Blog Challenges and School Assighments

Well I’m sure that alot of you know of the event that happened on August 24, 1814, but for those that don’t it was the day that the British burned down the white house during the war of 1812. Now I have a book that talks about major events in history, but I read up a little more on this one and I think I will do a little critique of how the book did, I think that my book does a decent job of explaining what happened during the burning of the white house, except it fails to mention why the british did it, mainly to get back at us for burning parliament, I would change it to have included some of the more important facts of the actual event.

If I was the editor of this book I would have added more backround knowledge of what happened AFTER they burned the white house because what happened after was that a huge hurricane, FOLLOWED by a tornado,  that devasted the British troop more then are defenses at the white house. I would make it more fun to read by making it have some comedy in it and nt to use such big words as to make in unbearable to read. Also I would add this picture to make it better: tornado_and_lighting

to show people what the tornado would look like, and that all if you want to learn more on the burning of the white house go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_of_Washington

The Bozeman Trail

Author: Matt | Filed under: Blog Challenges and School Assighments

Their is a neat little place out in Montana, basically it is a overland route connecting the gold rush territory of Montana to the Oregon Trail. Its most important period was from 1863-1868. The flow of pioneers and settlers through territory of American Indians provoked them to attack.  The U.S. Army undertook several military campaigns against the Indians to try to control the trail. Because of its association with frontier history and conflict with American Indians, the trail is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It was in 1863 this trail was discovered by a man named John Bozeman, it was great because it was better watered and it was more direct then any previous trail in Montana. Unfortunately it went through territory occupied by the Shoshone, Arapaho, and Lakota nations.

Bozeman led the first group of about 2,000 settlers on the trail in 1864 which would lead to two battles with the Indians against the Americans, two battle which the Americans won.

Today it is a modern highway route consisting of Interstate 25 runs from Douglas, Wyoming to Sheridan, Wyoming. Interstate 90 from Sheridan, Wyoming to Three Forks, Montana (30 miles west of Bozeman, Montana) and U.S. Route 287 from Three Forks to Virginia City, Montana cover roughly the same general route as the historic Bozeman Trail.

Great Leaders

Author: Matt | Filed under: Blog Challenges and School Assighments

Great Leaders often have quality that show up when they lead, One of the great leaders in my opnion is george washington he had some great qualitys he was a pateince leader, he waited for the right moment before striking the german in their encampment, on top of that it was a time of weakness for them considering it was christmas time and they were celebrating it. George also was a unwavering leader, even though he had a much smaller army, he stayed confident through it and was triumpant. Finally I think the last important quality is that George Washington had was that he had the faith to keep on going he didn’t doubt himself or his chances he knew that this was his moment and that he had to do what was best for his country. george%20washington

Answering the quote

Author: Matt | Filed under: Blog Challenges and School Assighments

There is an old quote that asked ” Do great leader make history? Or does history make great leaders? ” It is a time old quote that deserves to be answered. I believe that history itself is what makes great leader. History put people in the situation necessary for them to show their qualities that make them leaders, they need to be put in a position where they show their qualitys that make them leaders. This has happened time and time again and it contiunes to happen as more leaders are being made. I also believe that it is often the direnest of the situation that relates to how much of their leadership qualities come out.

Reflecting

Author: Matt | Filed under: Blog Challenges and School Assighments

Looking back on the whole significant objects I have very mixed feeling about all of it, on one side I was happy because at the end everything came full circle and we did well on the live auction and all, but I just wish that we did a better job with organization, I always seem to have a problem with that now matter what I do, but I gotta say I had alot of trouble writing the story I am just not good with historical fiction, I can write any other kind of fiction better, I’m just not that good inserting facts into it which is why are first draft got rejected and I had to write a new stroy entirely which I then sent off and Mr. Bogush helped alot with it with having these seeds from back then and everything, it was just a huge help, I guess I really more about history of the change in power and what effects that have more then anything seeing as I didn’t learn how to write historical fiction, Just writing challenged me more then anything, and I probably would have changed just how we did it process wise more then anything.

Leader

Author: Matt | Filed under: Blog Challenges and School Assighments

Leaders, they lead, us…….okay yeah sure, but there is much more to that, a leader is someone who walks that line between insanity and genius, they are a person who is willing to make a hard decision despite the consequences, they are a person who will not wavier when their time comes.

Leaders are never born, leadership is not thrusted upon someone from birth, they earn it through their experiences, trials, and failures. There was a time I was a leader when I was with my boy scout troop and I was responsible for the map and guiding us, I knew that by guiding them precisely through the forest to are camp site. There have been times when I have been a follower and it helps me to become a better leader,  I have been lead when we go on campout, we have rules to follow and new things to learn, following someone is a time of learning of new experiences for me. Anyone can be a leader it just takes the right quality, also if one learns leadership through another it also helps people become a leader. You could say that I am a leader of sorts, I lead with my mind and my heart, although people will not often follow me I still try hard to do so. My strongest ability as a leader is to never give up at what I’m doing, and that I have  a good heart coupled with a good sense of jugdement. To end this post I will leave you with a picture of a great leader in american history: Abraham Lincoln.abraham-lincoln-picture

You see this? It looks like an ordinary set of headphones right? Well there is a special reason behind this you see when I was around like 9 my father took me to the lake behind are house where he told me if I caught my first fish he would give me something special, I spent all day trying to catch a fish and it wasn’t until we almost left that I caught the smallest fish in the whole lake. When we got back home my dad gave me these pair of headphones that he had,  Only problem was I didn’t have anything to use the headphones with so lesson learned I guess.

Naval Act

Author: Matt | Filed under: Blog Challenges and School Assighments

Back in 1794 an act was passed that started are United States Navy, they built 6 ships that has now grown into hundreds of naval ships, this was the Naval Act of 1794.

Even though it was passed about 200 years ago, todays naval ships and ships back then are still similar while still being different as time went on.

This is the USS Constitution: 300px-US_Navy_101021-N-7642M-317_USS_Constitution_returns_to_her_pier_after_an_underway_to_celebrate_her_213th_launching_day_anniversary

and this is the USS Wasp: 300px-USS_Wasp_LHD-1

both of these ships share similarities and differences.

For instance the USS Wasp has 6 cargo elevators, quite an upgrade from the old wooden stairs that the crew used back then, the Wasp also has impressive medical and dental capabilities that could help out 600 crew members, the constitution had little to no medical equipment.

The Wasp also had impressive storage capabilities, with enough space to store Helicopters in the hangar bay. Old Ironsides, as the ship was nicked named also had good storage space for a ship of her time, with enough space to hold large cannons.

The Wasp is a steam powered ship which is a change from the days when the Constitution moved using only the wind and its sails.

Finally with the Constitution it was formed from white pine, longleaf pine, white oak, and, most importantly, southern live oak. Which is why it never lost a battle at sea, while the Wasp is formed from 21,000 tons of steel, 400 tons of aluminum, 400 miles (640 km) of electrical/electronic cables, 80 miles (130 km) of piping and tubing of various types and sizes, and 10 miles (16 km) of ventilation ducting. Making it the biggest man made object to be at sea.
