Star- Spangled Banner- Translation Please!
January 12, 2010
The Star Spangled banner is a very famous song that is known to be about the American flag. It was created by a man named Francis Scott Key, during the war of 1812. These are the lyrics:
Oh, say, can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?
Here is a small translation of what these lines might mean:
Oh, say, can you see by the dawn’s early light- you can see the the flag this morning.
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming- what we proudly see as morning comes.
Whose broad stripes and brights stars, thru the perilous fight- the American flag lasted through the war.
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming- the militia was bravely fighting.
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air- bombs and rockets exploding.
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there- that the American flag was still raised.
O say, does that star -spangled banner yet wave- The American flag still waves.
O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave- We’re a country of freedom and bravery once again!
