INTRODUCTION
He was known for his accomplishments as Secretary of State as a Congressman. He tried to convince the nation to engage in a large scale cultural and economic development. He was also the first president who was the son of a President. He was elected in 1824. Have you figured out who i was describing yet… JOHN QUINCY ADAMS!
EARLY LIFE
John Quincy Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts,July 11, 1767. Adams was born to his mother, Abigail Adams, and his father, John Adams. He witnessed the Battle of Bunker Hill at the age of 9. Adams spent much of his childhood in Europe, mostly in France. At the age of 15, Adams served as Secretary to the Mission to Russia. When Adams was returning to the United States, he studied at Harvard. After his graduation, he studied law. President Washington appointed Adams Minister to the Netherlands in 1794. He held this position until 1797, when he became Minister to Prussia. In 1802, he was elected Massachusetts State Senator. In 1803, he was elected U.S. Senator. From 1809- 1814 Adams served as the first U.S. Minister of Russia. In 1814, he became the head of the delegation, charged with negotiating the Treaty of Ghent which ended the War of 1812. From 1815-1817, Adams served as Minister to Great Britain. From 1817-1825 he was Secretary of State in the Monroe administration. Adams ran for President in 1824, and lost in both the popular and electoral votes. Andrew Jackson received 99 electoral votes, Adams 84, William Crawford 41, and Henry Clay 37. No one had a majority of the electoral votes, the decision as to who would be president was made by the House of Representatives. The House elected Adams over rival candidate Andrew Jackson. Adams served as the sixth President of the United States from March 4, 1825 until March 4, 1829.
Adams died February 23, 1848 in Washington, DC from a stroke.
SUPORRTING
I support John Adams because he served as the United States sixth president. Not only was John Adams our sixth president, but Adams was the first son of a president to become a president. Adams is a good man to supprot because he become a Secretary of our state. I think the main reason I think i would support Adams is because he knew what people wanted and he gave it to them to have. I guess i could say if Admas was alive today and was running for president I would trust every word he said. Although Adams did ignore support needed in Washington, even among his own party. Faced throughout his term, Adams refused to forge the political alliances necessary to push his ideas into policy. Adams was later replaced by Andrew Jackson.
HOW ARE ISSUES TODAY DIFFERENT FROM THOSE IN PAST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS?
In this election, nominations came from state legislatures and not from congressional. Adams’ followers referred to themselves as National Republicans. Supporters of Jackson were called Jacksonians. The Jacksonians eventually evolved into the Democratic-Republicans and finally the Democratic Party. The campaigns of both men focused more on personalities than political issues. Adams was accused of using taxpayers’ money for personal benefit and of offering up an American servant girl to satiate the desires of the Czar of Russia. Jackson was accused of being a gambler, a duelist and a slave trader. He and his wife were also labeled adulterers. Back then if you were black you wouldn’t even be allowed to vote, wether the less become or run for president. Women in the 1800’s were probably not allwoed to vote like the blck people. Now a days, it doesn’t matter what color or rase or gender, you can vote for anyone running, accept if your under 18.
I WOULD VOTE FOR JOHN ADAMS IF HE WAS STILL ALIVE TODAY!
