Tecumseh

February 26th, 2011

Over break my teacher wanted us to read a section of the textbook and say weather we thought the textbook did a good or a bad job of explaining the character or event. So, the section I have chosen to do is Tecumseh. I think that the textbook did a good job covering this section on him and I really enjoyed hearing about him. He was a leader, a skilled warrior, and a brilliant tribe speaker. He wanted all the Indians of different territories to unite so they could fight the American settlers and he even founded a village for his followers. William Henry Harrison thought of Tecumseh as a serious threat. In 1810 Tecumseh informed Harrison of how angry the Indians were over the treaty. Tecumseh told the American settlers they couldn’t take the land when they had been there first and Harrison warned him not to resist the power of the U.S. In this section I would have included more of the emotion that both sides were feeling. Also, some of the struggles that both sides went through. I would change it by adding more detail and going more in depth on both sides. If I wanted to make it more interesting for people in Middle School then I would add more pictures to the textbook for them to look at so they could really feel like they were there. A part of it I would change would be the part where it said that Tecumseh was trying to join a lot of the territories together to fight. I would add on to it and say some of the struggles. For example, if one of the territories didn’t want to join this group, what would they do? Thanks for listening to this post!!!!!!!!

The Dawes Act

February 5th, 2011

So, my teacher Mr. Bogush wants me to teach him something new about the 19th century in the United States that he hasn’t learned yet. I did some research and found out that in the 19th century the U.S. Government passed the Dawes Act in an attempt to make the Indians adopt their ways and to be more “civilized.” The government wanted the Indians to dress just like the Americans and be the same exact religion. So, basically what the government wanted to do was have the Indians forget their culture altogether. They wanted to create independent farmers out of the Indians. All of the Indian tribes were to disappear and no longer exist. The Indians lost much of their land and barely got paid for the land that they had given up. In the end, the Dawes Act was not successful. I hope you all learned a little something about the 19th century.

Sam.

January 24th, 2011

Someone I know that is a leader is my friend Sam. She has the qualities of being sympathetic, courage, and being wise. She’s used these qualities when I was having some family trouble and she helped to pull me through because she could relate to the matter. She was sympathetic when I was really upset and was always there for me. She was wise when she was telling me how to handle the issue and she had courage because she had went through these kind of problems with her own family. We have to interpret this quote, “Do great leaders make history or does history make great leaders?” The first part of this quote means that leaders do really great things and they then make history and I think the second part might mean that maybe history exaggerates about some leaders to make them seem better than they really are. I believe that leaders make history because if you do something great then you will go down in history. Maybe you won’t go down in history so the whole world knows about you, but you could go down in history in your town or state. I hope that you become a leader too!

Feathered and Tarred…Tough Job ehhh???

January 12th, 2011

What we did in class was we picked a significant object, but it had to go along with the story that we were assigned. The story that my group was assigned was the Whiskey Rebellion. The story was about a tax collector who got feathered and tarred because the farmers couldn’t produce enough money to pay the taxes. Hence, the feather. I liked this project a lot except some of it was a little confusing. We were supposed to add some things to the story yet not add too much fantasy. We still had to have the basic story too. I just think that the directions should have been a little clearer. What I did like is that were going to be able to auction off the feather and see how much people bid. All the money goes to charity of course and everyone knows that their not the real objects from all the stories. I’m excited to see how much were going to get for the feather. I learned a lot about the Whiskey Rebellion and how much pain the farmers went through. I think you should do it in the future because I think next year’s students would really enjoy it. It was really a great experience. Challenging, but great.

I’m a Leader

January 12th, 2011

What characteristics does a good leader have? I think that a good leader should have responsibility, be able to take on big tasks, but also be able to be sympathetic to others while being able to be firm in a tough situation. Also, you shouldn’t let being a leader get to your head. Are leaders made or born? I think that leaders are born because if you try to make a leader they might not have the qualities that your looking for. Being born as a leader means you really have the heart to be a leader and you’re a natural. Describe a time when you were a leader. Well, I have to be a leader a lot, but I would say one time I was a leader was in science when the rest of my group wasn’t doing work and I had to do it all. It wasn’t fun, but in the end I got the job done. Describe a time when you followed a leader. A time when I followed a leader was when we were shoveling snow and my brother found a faster way to get the job done. So, I followed what he was doing and we finished faster and more efficiently. Can anyone be a leader? No, I don’t think everyone can be a leader. Some people are just natural-born followers because they don’t have the qualities of a leader. Are you a leader? Yes, I do think I’m a leader. I think this because in a tough situation I always come out and try my best and I don’t let anyone tell me that I can’t do it because you can. Nothing is impossible. What are your strongest abilities as a leader? My strongest ability as a leader is probably that I can take charge of a lot of situations, but not that I’m bossy about it, but I can get the job done. I don’t let leadership skills get to my head either. If you don’t consider yourself a leader, what is standing in the way? Well, since I do consider myself a leader I won’t answer that, but if you don’t consider yourself a leader, what is standing in YOUR way???? POLICE

Do you want to know why I have this shoe? Well, hold one a minute because I’ll tell you why I have this shoe and why it’s so significant. This shoe as you can see looks a little old. Well, it isn’t. It’s just been danced in many times before and has tape on it so it won’t scratch the floors. This is an Irish Step Dance shoe and this is my ninth year doing it. It’s a lot of fun to do and I really enjoy it, but where Irish Step Dancing was originally created was in Ireland. My great-grandmother was also going to get on the Titanic from Ireland back in the day. She had her ticket and everything and was all set to go, but then sickness came around. Her brother got sick and she had to stay with him and miss her ride on the Titanic. It’s a good thing she missed her ride too or else she could have died then. I hope you enjoyed my story and even though the Titanic part has nothing to do with the shoe, you need the shoe in the beginning of the story for it to make sense. It’s all connected and I think it’s a really cool story. Thanks for listening!!!

September 4, 2071

December 22nd, 2010

On this day I would be 75 years old. What would happen is everything in the world would be enchanted and there would be royalty. Girls would be able to wear beautiful dresses that were all different colors and there would be no wars. I would be royalty and live in a castle like Beauty and the Beast. In that movie the whole castle is enchanted and that’s how my castle would be. Everyone would be nice and cheerful, but if you were really horrible then people would take you to me and I would turn you into a frog. Also, if people needed to get away from their lives for a while and just leave because they felt like everything was about to explode in their lives then they could just take a boat to some island and then stay there for as long as they needed because the island would expand if more people came. The world would be different from what it is today. You would be able to be yourself and no one would care. You would be able to speak your mind and have the courage to do crazy things. You would be able to be a leader and not a follower and there would be NO drama. You would get to live your life to the extreme and take risks that would change your life. I can’t wait until September 4, 2071.

Boats Are My Friends

December 17th, 2010

100723-N-2531C-001Today we will be comparing one of the boats of the original boats that they created after the passing of the Naval Act in 1794. We are going to compare it to a modern U.S. Navy ship. The original ones had a narrow beam and they mounted heavy guns. Also, their was a sagging of the ships at the ends from the middle, but that gave them heavy planking. They were designed to over power other frigates and be able to run away from ships from the line. The only surviving ship of the six is the Constitution. The  Constitution  is one of four presently commisioned ships in the U.S. Navy known to have sunken an enemy vessel with her shipboard weaponry. A modern U.S. Navy Vessel also has weapons at hand if they happen to come into battle with an enemy vessel. Also, these ones cost about 1 billion dollars and are expected to live pretty long. For the crew there would be 24 Officers and 340 enlisted. The speed that these boats will go up to is 30 plus knots. Also, these ships are very large and are designed to go into battle so their pretty tough. Thanks for listening!!! :)

MYTH OR TRUTH?!?

December 14th, 2010

Well, I think it is a myth that George Washington cut down the cherry tree. I think so because first of all why would a six year old get a hatchet? That’s just dangerous and he could get seriously injured. Also, because this story was created to teach kids about honesty and how lying just gets you into deeper trouble and more lies. When I did some research it said that the story was actually created by Parson Weems too. Thank you for listening and I hope you are honest!!!!

What Would Happen If…

December 14th, 2010

What would happen if I became a famous singer? Well, if I became a famous singer i would be able to travel the world. Also, I could provide for my family and they would never have to work again because I’d get all the money that they needed. I wouldn’t forget any of my friends and I would always throw parties and have fun too, but at the same time this would be my job and I’d have to be responsible. I think it would be awesome to be a famous singer, but I wouldn’t want to become a singer who turns bad. Not all singers are bad either and I would make sure that I would stay on the right track. The only minus would be that I wouldn’t be able to be home all the time and I might miss my friends and family a lot, but u have to make some sacrifices to live the dream…don’t you?
